LEVYdance National Vimeo Audition
June 17, 2010
LEVYdance made a striking impression when it presented Everyone Intimate Alone Visibly at Joyce SoHo this past winter. Now the company is looking for four dancers (male and female) to create and perform a new work, which will be presented in San Francisco at ODC Theater as part of its grand reopening during the last two weeks of October 2010. Auditions will take place virtually through Vimeo, where dancers can post a video on the LEVYdance group page. Visit LEVYdance’s audition form for more information. Audition videos must be posted by Monday, June 28th at midnight, Pacific Standard Time. The below video is a rehearsal of the piece that will premiere at ODC in October.
The first section of the rehearsal process begins in July 2010 and will happen virtually through choreographic and writing exercises posted to the LEVYdance Vimeo group. Dancers will record and upload their creative assignments to the group for discussion and expansion. The national cast will meet in San Francisco from September 2010 through October 2010 for final rehearsals and performances. Dancers will be compensated for rehearsals and performance. For more information and to submit your audition application, visit LEVYdance’s audition form and post your audition video on the LEVYdance Vimeo group page by Monday June 28th at midnight (PST).

The Whiz: Obamaland

Ease on down the road to recession and back from the brink of fantasy in Nicholas Leichter and Monstah Black’s take on “The Wiz/ard of Oz” for the Obama generation. Featuring choreography by Leichter and a commissioned score by Black with added musical selections, The Whiz: Obamaland is a full-spectrum original show of song, dance, and theatrical extravaganza that revisits The Wizard of Oz and its black version, The Wiz, through the prism of American euphoria, expectation, disappointment, and acceptance of the imagined promise of a post-racial society. The 75-minute work showcases an array of different dance, performance, and music styles – house, funk, postmodern, drag, hip-hop, contemporary, and psychedelic – which traverse a landscape of hopes, fears, dreams, and home.
Performances take place Wednesday through Saturday, June 16th thorough 19th at 8 PM at Abrons Arts Center, 466 Grand Street (at Pitt Street) in New York City. Tickets are $20 at Ovationtix or by calling 212.352.3101.
Like No Other

I’m currently in San Francisco, where this Sony ad was filmed a few years ago. The city’s hilly streets brought out the best in these colorful bouncy balls, don’t you think? So beautifully un-choreographed, they really have a life of their own.
Bill Young/Colleen Thomas & Co. Present LIT
June 3, 2010
This Saturday, Bill Young and Colleen Thomas continue their LIT (Loft Into Theater) series at 100 Grand Street in SoHo. The annual event brings together a group of dancers and artists who will present experimental works in an intimate setting. Among this year’s performers is Heidi Henderson, with whom I had the pleasure of studying from 2003 to 2004. She was an inspiring professor and a fascinating performer.
Tickets to the one-night-only performance on June 5th are $15 and can be reserved by calling 212.925.6573. Doors open at 8:30 PM. 100 Grand Street in SoHo.
