Gallim dancers Andrea Miller, Francesca Romo, Jason Fordham, and Moo Kim appeared in a K-Swiss commercial made by Andreas von Scheele. It looks like they had the freedom to incorporate a lot of movement from their repertoire. Some photos from the shoot are on Gallim’s website. Plus, every month the company’s dancers are sharing some things they like at the Gallim Dance Blog.

Tasha Taylor in Amy Greenfield's "Spirit in the Flesh"

This weekend, Symphony Space will present award-winning director and producer Amy Greenfield’s three-part multimedia event “Club Midnight: Flesh into Light“. The evening will begin with the expanded version of Greenfield’s award-winning film “Club Midnight”, which transforms the erotic dancer’s art into lyrically inspired films. The premieres of “Live Tides” and “Spirit in the Flesh” will follow. “Spirit in the Flesh” unites Leonard Nimoy’s photography book, Shekhina (which, in Kaballah, is an all-encompassing female power of creativity and healing) with film, dance, music, and spoken word. The piece has been designed specifically for the Thalia Theater, and features music by Philip Glass, Einsturzende Neubauten, Lee Hazlewood, and Dennis Hopper.

You can learn more about this event at the Club Midnight website or at Amy Greenfield’s blog, Cinema Body.

Join the Performance Club!

January 7, 2009

The newly formed Performance Club has two exciting (and inexpensive) events this month: “The Shipment”, a black identity politics piece by Young Jean Lee at The Kitchen, and Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet‘s winter season, which includes world premieres by Didy Veldman and Luca Veggetti. You can get the details about the events on WNYC’s blog. Everyone is invited, so bring your friends and encourage them to participate in the online discussions as well.

The fearless leader and founder of the Performance Club, Claudia La Rocco, recently talked to Didy Veldman about choreographing “frame of view” for Cedar Lake. Watch the video to hear excerpts from their conversation.

The internet is almost full, according to Seth Godin. Perhaps this post – or even this entire blog – is contributing to the problem. But Seth brings up some good points, which I thought were worth sharing here:

Ten years ago, you had a shot of at least being aware of everything that mattered. Five years ago, you had to be really selective about what you took in, but at least it was possible to know what you didn’t know. Today, it’s impossible. Today, you can’t even read every article on a thin slice of a thin topic.

You can’t keep up with the status of your friends on the social networks. No way. You can’t read every important blog… you can’t even read all the blogs that tell you what the important blogs are saying.

That being said, does the internet really need another dance blog? Considering that we’re all suffering from information overload, the answer is probably not. But when I reflect on how blogging has connected me – virtually and in the real world – to readers/commenters, other bloggers, and individuals who are passionate about dance, it seems like another addition to the blogosphere wouldn’t be so bad. It’s important to remember that there’s a human being behind every blog post, article, and commenter. Speaking of which, Deborah Friedes and Tal Galili have just launched Dance Bloggers, a new site that aggregates feeds from contributing dance blogs. It’s another way of bringing bloggers and readers together. Check it out.

Misnomer Dance Theater will present the world premiere of Being Together at the Joyce SoHo starting this Thursday, December 4th. Being Together features three new works and original music by Evan Ziporyn, performed live by the Real Quiet ensemble during the first weekend of shows. Here is the company’s new improv preview:

On December 14th, Misnomer will be broadcasting their performance live. If you can’t attend one of the shows, or if you’re eager to see them again, here’s your chance. Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer Chris Elam is truly leading the way in the intersection of dance and technology. Last December Misnomer won the Ideablob contest, and the company was recently featured in the NY Times. Also, be sure to check out their blog.
